Analyse und Optimierung der Beziehung zwischen Grünland, Tiergesundheit und Tierzucht bei Mutterkuhherden: Teilprojekt TiHo Hannover: Untersuchung der Tiergesundheit von Mutterkühen und sie beeinflussende Risikofaktoren Organic Eprints
Gillandt, Kathia; Kemper, Nicole.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate live weight gain per animal and per area and its relationship with the characteristics of pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Paiaguás and Piatã. A randomized blocks experimental design was used, with two treatments and six replicates. The experimental area was 8.0 ha, divided into twelve paddocks of 0.67 ha. The grazing method used was continuous stocking, with variable stocking rate. Three tester steers were used per paddock. Sward heights were measured once a week, and the stocking rate (SR) was adjusted using regulator steers to maintain the sward height at 30 cm. Pasture samples were collected once a month, and herbage accumulation rate (HAR), percentage of leaves (PL), leaf:stem ratio...

Anthelmintic activity of forage chicory (Cichorium intybus) and field efficacy of ivermectin against gastrointestinal nematodes in Danish cattle Organic Eprints
Peña-Espinoza, Miguel.
Parasitism with gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes is ubiquitous in grazing cattle and its control is critical to sustain satisfactory levels of animal health, welfare and productivity. Currently, conventional parasite control strategies relying exclusively on anthelmintic drugs are severely threatened by the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in bovine nematodes in several countries. In Denmark, cattle farmers and their veterinarians depend largely on macrocyclic lactones (ML), mainly ivermectin (IVM), for nematode control. However, no studies have evaluated the field efficacy of IVM against GI nematodes in Danish cattle. Alternative control approaches to minimize selection for AR and that can complement the use of the still effective anthelmintics...

Antiparasitic activity of chicory (Cichorium intybus) and its natural bioactive compounds in livestock: a review Organic Eprints
Peña-Espinoza, Miguel; Valente, Angela H.; Thamsborg, Stig M.; Simonsen, Henrik T.; Boas, Ulrik; Enemark, Heidi L.; López-Muñoz, Rodrigo; Williams, Andrew R..
Increasing drug resistance in gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of livestock and concerns about chemical residues in animal products and the environment are driving the development of alternative control strategies that are less reliant on the use of synthetic drugs. An increasingly investigated approach is the use of bioactive forages with antiparasitic properties as part of the animal’s diet (nutraceuticals) or as potential sources of novel, natural parasiticides. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a multi-purpose crop and one of the most promising bioactive forages in temperate regions, and numerous in vivo trials have explored its potential against parasitic nematodes in livestock. However, it is unclear whether chicory can induce a direct and broad activity...

Artificial infestation of Boophilus microplus in beef cattle heifers of four genetic groups Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Ana Mary da; Alencar,Maurício Mello de; Regitano,Luciana Correia de Almeida; Oliveira,Márcia Cristina de Sena; Barioni Júnior,Waldomiro.
Resistance of beef cattle heifers to the cattle tick Boophilus microplus was evaluated by artificial infestation of 66 beef cattle heifers of the following genetic groups: 16 Nelore (NE), 18 Canchim x Nelore (CN), 16 Angus x Nelore (AN) and 16 Simmental x Nelore (SN). The animals, with a mean age of 16.5 months, were maintained with no chemical tick control in a Brachiaria decumbens pasture. Four artificial infestations with 20,000 B. microplus larvae were carried out 14 days apart and from day 18 to day 22 of each infestation the number of engorged female ticks (> 4.5 mm) was counted on the left side of each heifer. Data were analyzed as the percentage of return (PR = percentage of ticks counted relative to the number infested), transformed to (PR)¼,...

Association between IGF-IR gene polymorphisms and productive and reproductive traits in Holstein cows Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Schoenau,W.; Porciuncula,P.M.; Zamberlan,G.; Mesquita,F.S.; Vieira,V.; Oliveira,J.F.C.; Gonçalves,P.B.D..
The association between single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) in the gene of insulin-like growth factor-I receptor (IGF-IR) and age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), lactation length (LL), and milk yield (MY) was studied using 106 graded Holstein females. The polimerase chain reaction (PCR) with specific initiating oligonucleotides, resulted an amplified fragment of 335pb. The population genotypes frequencies were 82.1% and 17.9%, for AA and AB genotypes, respectively. The frequency of A allele was 0.91 and 0.09 of B allele. No association between the identified polymorphism and AFC, CI, and MY was observed. The LL was positively associated (P<0.05) with the absence of B allele. Animals carrying the AA genotype presented a longer...

Association between molecular markers linked to the Leptin gene and weight gain in postpartum beef cows Ciência Rural
Almeida,Sabrina Esteves Matos; Almeida,Erik Amazonas de; Terra,Gustavo; Neves,Jairo Pereira; Gonçalves,Paulo Bayard Dias; Weimer,Tania de Azevedo.
Three short tandem repeats (STRs), BMS1074, BM1500, IDVGA-51, and three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), LEPSau3AI (A/B), LEPSau3AI (+/-) and LEPKpn2I linked to the LEP gene were investigated to verify associations with productive performance in postpartum cows of two beef cattle breeds, Aberdeen Angus (AA, n=98) and Charolais (C, n=83). After polymerase chain reaction, STRs were analyzed by vertical electrophoresis and SNPs in agarose gel after endonucleases cleavage. In AA herd 79% of BMS1074*151 carriers had a lower average daily weight gain (ADG) when compared with the population mean daily weight gain (103g), while 62% of BMS1074*151 non-carriers presented a higher ADG (P<0.01); AA animals with at least one BMS1074*151 allele showed a ADG...

Association between MUC1 gene polymorphism and expected progeny differences in Nelore cattle (Bos primigenius indicus) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Souza,Fabio Ricardo Pablos de; Vozzi,Pedro Alejandro; Vila,Reginaldo Aparecido; Boligon,Arione Augusti; Galerani,Marli Aparecida Vani; Lobo,Raysildo Barbosa; Martelli,Lucia Regina.
MUC1 is a heavily glycosylated mammalian transmembrane protein expressed by mucosal secretory tissues for both protection against microbial infection and lubrication. An important characteristic of MUC1 is its variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) containing several sites for O-glycosylation. VNTR length has been associated with many human diseases and with certain economically important traits in domestic ruminants. The aim of the present study was to correlate the length of MUC1 gene VNTR with expected progeny differences (EPDs) obtained for growth, fertility and carcass traits. Five alleles were identified, with alleles containing short VNTRs being more frequent than those with long, thereby demonstrating that Brazilian Nelore cattle are...

Association of CAPN1 and CAST gene polymorphisms with meat tenderness in Bos taurus beef cattle from Argentina Genet. Mol. Biol.
Corva,Pablo; Soria,Liliana; Schor,Alejandro; Villarreal,Edgardo; Cenci,Macarena Pérez; Motter,Mariana; Mezzadra,Carlos; Melucci,Lilia; Miquel,Cristina; Paván,Enrique; Depetris,Gustavo; Santini,Francisco; Naón,Juan Grigera.
The activity of the calpains/calpastatin proteolytic system is closely related to the postmortem tenderization of meat. We investigated the association between beef tenderness and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers on the CAPN1 gene (SNP316, alleles C/G; SNP530 alleles A/G) and the CAST gene 3' untranslated region (SNP2870, alleles A/G). We sampled nine slaughter groups comprising 313 steers which had been reared in beef production systems in Argentina between 2002 and 2004 from crosses between Angus, Hereford and Limousin cattle. Minor allele frequencies for the markers were 0.27 to 0.46 (C), 0.02 to 0.18 (A), and 0.24 to 0.53 (A), respectively. The presence of CAPN1 markers had significant effects on meat shear force but no detectable effects...

Association of GH and IGF-1 polymorphisms with growth traits in a synthetic beef cattle breed Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pereira,Andréa Pozzi; Alencar,Maurício Mello de; Oliveira,Henrique Nunes de; Regitano,Luciana Correia de Almeida.
The Canchim beef cattle (5/8 Charolais + 3/8 Zebu) has been selected for meat production in Brazil since late 1950. In the present work the effects of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) polymorphisms were investigated in 688 animals born between 1998 and 2000. These animals belonged to two genetic groups, i.e., traditional and new lineages. Genotype effects on expected breeding values for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW) and yearling weight (YW) were investigated by the least square method. Significant effects were found for GH genotype on YW (p < 0.05), with positive effects associated with the LV (leucine/valine) genotype. For IGF-1 genotypes, significant effects were found on BW (p < 0.01) and YW (p < 0.01)....

ATITUDES DE COORDENAÇÃO DE PRODUTORES RURAIS NA CADEIA DA CARNE BOVINA: O CASO DO CITE 120 AgEcon
Malafaia, Guilherme Cunha; Maciel, Alessandra Costenaro; Camargo, Maria Emilia.
The changes in the worldwide competitive scenario have posed difficulties to the survival of companies, forcing them to establish necessary cooperative relations for maintenance and survival in the markets. However, the lack of coordination and cooperation is considered a classic problem in the beef chain. Taking these assumptions into account, the purpose of the present article is to verify how the organizational network CITE 120, established by a group of beef producers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), has addressed the environmental demands in the meat production sector and how the systemic relationships for the strengthening of the network’s interests are being promoted and organized. For the purpose of this research in-depth interviews were...
